This event responds to UNESCO’s October intangible cultural heritage (ICH) campaign with a strong focus on sustainability and responsible consumption. The initiative centers on Yaoban Cloth, a traditional plant-dyeing technique in Shanghai, recognized as intangible cultural heritage. By reusing leftover fabrics from the Yaoban Cloth making process, the project collaborates with an pet brand to create pet bandanas—turning “waste” into cultural lifestyle products.
The objectives are to:
- Promote sustainability by practicing zero-waste design and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Revitalize heritage by embedding traditional crafts into global contemporary lifestyle and pet culture.
- Raise awareness of the link between heritage, ecological responsibility, and daily life through playful, creative, and inclusive activities.
Through hands-on workshops, a pop-up exhibition, and a global online campaign (#PetsWearHeritage), the project demonstrates how ICH can be a driver for sustainable innovation and cross-cultural dialogue.
In October, the online campaign will launch the #PetsWearHeritage challenge, inviting pet owners worldwide to share photos of their sustainable heritage bandanas.
